Visian ICL FAQ

What is Visian ICL?

Visian ICL™ (Implantable Collamer Lens) is an advanced eye implant that provides permanent, although potentially reversible, sight correction. Unlike contact lenses, ICL lenses are manufactured to be placed inside the eye surgically, and they remain in your eyes for as long as desired. ICL lenses are made using purified collagen, often give a sharper vision than either contacts or eyeglasses, and require no maintenance at all.

Furthermore, unlike LASIK laser eye surgery, ICL Eye Surgery does not remove or alter the shape of your corneas. It is usually a permanent procedure, but the lenses can be removed later in life, if necessary.

What are the benefits of Visian ICL™️?

ICL is a versatile, pain-free alternative to glasses, contacts, and even laser eye surgery. For starters, ICL provides high-definition vision for any distance. Although ICL is a refractive surgery method, its results are fully reversible. Plus, it doesn’t matter how thin your corneas are because ICL leaves them untouched.

Unlike LASIK, Visian ICL™ is an additive method that doesn’t remove or reshape any part of your eyes. Moreover, ICL comes with its own UV filters which add another layer of security that keeps harmful UV rays from harming your eyes.

Who is eligible for Visian ICL™️?

The ideal candidate for Visian ICL™ eye surgery is aged 21-45, has good vision with glasses or contacts, healthy eyes, and a high prescription for nearsightedness, with or without astigmatism. ICL lenses can correct myopia for prescriptions between -3.00 and -20.00 diopters.

For safety reasons, patients must not have glaucoma, iris infections, persistent dry eyes, corneal endothelial dystrophy, or any other serious eye diseases or conditions. Also, the patient’s prescription must stay stable for at least six months to a year prior to surgery.

Is the Visian ICL™️ safe?

Visian ICL™ lenses have been safely implanted in hundreds of thousands of eyes worldwide. However, like any other surgical procedure, ICL has some potential risks of its own. In some patients, they can create elevated eye pressure, an increase in astigmatism, or a loss of corrected vision. However, it is important to note that these cases are rare and, due to the procedure’s versatility, easy to correct by an experienced eye surgeon.

At Hill Vision Services, each candidate is evaluated thoroughly by our highly-qualified ophthalmologists and provided with personalized eye care that suits his or her needs.

What happens during the ICL procedure?

A Visian ICL lens is a type of Phakic (meaning in addition to the natural lens) intra-ocular Lens. The Visian ICL procedure involves inserting the small implantable lens inside your eyes. For this procedure, patients receive both topical drops and lidocaine gel to anesthetize the eye, as well as intravenous anesthesia to keep calm and relaxed. In an operating room, the refractive surgeon inserts the Visian ICL lens in front of the natural crystalline lens of the eye.

The ICL procedure is quick (10-15 minutes per eye), painless (mild anesthetics and sedatives are applied), and involves doing both eyes the same day. Patients typically see the surgeon for a follow-up visit in the office the same day as the procedure.

How effective will the Visian ICL™️ be in improving my vision?

With a track record of nearly 20 years and hundreds of thousands of satisfied patients, the Visian ICL™ procedure is a proven method of correcting nearsightedness with excellent results. Eye doctors have implanted ICL lenses on patients with severe myopia and astigmatism and found it gives excellent results. It comes as no surprise then that the satisfaction rate among patients is extraordinarily high — more than 99%.

Can the Visian ICL be removed from my eye?

Yes. One of the benefits of Visian ICL is that, while they are designed for permanent use, they can be removed by your eye care surgeon. Removing ICL lenses does no damage to your corneas, irises, or other parts of your eyes but it does cancel the lenses nearsightedness correction benefits.

How long can the Visian ICL™️ stay inside the eye?

Visian ICL is a permanent contact lens with no expiration date. Once inserted, ICL lenses provide non-stop eyesight correction without requiring any type of maintenance. At most, all you need to do is get a yearly checkup in your eye care center to make sure everything is in order. If your prescription changes or you want to use a different corrective method, you can ask your eye doctor to remove it in the future.

Will I be able to see or feel the lens?

No. Visian ICL™ lenses are placed behind the iris (the colored part of your eyes). That is why they are only visible at a microscope during an eye exam. Furthermore, ICL lenses are customized for each patient. That is why you will not feel them once they are inserted and seated in position.

What is the lens made of?

ICL lenses are made using Collamer (a collagen co-polymer) and purified collagen (a natural component found in the body). These materials are highly biocompatible, so they do not cause an allergic reaction or feel uncomfortable inside the eye.
